What is Blue Matcha and how is it different than Green Matcha?

If you're into new trending superfood drinks then you've definitely heard of BLUE MATCHA.  We often get asked what is blue matcha?  How is it different than green matcha?  Why is it blue?  What even is it?

While there are a lot of differences between these two superfoods that make them each unique and special, there's also a ton of similarities!

In this post, we’re clarifying what blue matcha is exactly, how its different than green matcha and why this drink is trending? but first....

1. Let's begin with what is matcha?

Don't worry- we know that if you're apart of the Good & Super Gang, chances are you already know what matcha is.  So hopefully we can teach you something you don't already know- like what does the word matcha actually mean?!

The mass production and development of the traditional matcha tea ceremony originated in Japan.  In Japanese language "matcha"  actually translates to "ground tea" or "powdered tea".

At its root, matcha is not exclusively associated with green tea.  Which brings us to what is the difference between blue matcha & green matcha?

2. Same same, but different....

While both blue matcha & green matcha are technically both "matcha", aka "ground tea"- the types of tea that they actually are, are different.

Green matcha comes from green tea leaves called tencha.

Blue matcha comes from Butterfly Pea Flowers.  The flowers grow in a shape that resembles a butterfly which is how butterfly pea flowers got their name.

3. Where does the blue color actually come from?

The butterfly pea flowers' pigments contain anthocyanin- an antioxidant that gives the powder a brilliant blue color.

Anthocyanin is also found naturally occurring in other blue and purple fruits and vegetables, such as berries.

4.  Is there a taste difference between blue matcha & green matcha?

Let's talk about TASTE.  Since blue matcha and green matcha are derived from different tea leaves & flowers, there is a difference in taste. (Although both teas are unique and delicious in their own ways!!)

Green matcha tastes mildly earthy with a touch of umami flavor, sweetness and little to no bitterness.

Blue matcha tastes earthy, floral, light and subtle.

5. What are the different uses of green matcha vs blue matcha?

The fundamental difference when it comes to use between green matcha and blue matcha is caffeine.

Green matcha contains caffeine and is known to give a light energy boost, making green matcha the perfect morning choice.  Matcha can keep you alert for long periods of time without the jitters and energy crash associated with coffee.

Blue matcha contains zero caffeine and does not stimulate in any way, making blue matcha a great choice for a refreshing and nourishing evening drink.  Blue matcha is also known to calm the nervous system and provide anxiety relief and relaxation.

Another huge difference between the two matchas is color! When added, green matcha turns whatever it is mixed with green. When steeped, blue matcha can CHANGE COLOR to a range of different shades all the way from blue- to violet- to deep magenta- to purple- depending on the pH of what it is mixed with.

6. How are green matcha and blue matcha similar?

Whether you're into Blue Matcha or Green Matcha, both are excellent superfoods that deserve a place in your pantry.

When incorporated into your daily routine, both of these superfoods have the ability to nourish your body, soul and mind. Both blue matcha and green matcha contain antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties alongside many other nutritional benefits.
